Question

B.) The graph directly above shows the rate of substance transport over time when the cells are placed in 0.10mM solutions of A, B, and C, respectively. Based upon these data and the data for part A, which of the following is the likely mode of transport of substance C? (active transport, facilitated diffusion, or simple diffusion) Explain your selection.

In part A of this two part question, the answer was simple diffusion because as the concentration increased, substance A kept going up at a linear rate of transport into the cell. The graph showed B or C started off linear and then became a straight line after concentration levels were reached because they reached equillibrium.

I've come to the conclusion that the answer for this question should be facilitated diffusion because the rate of transport doesn't change for substance C as time goes on. If it was active transport, then there would be a required input of energy. Since C remains constant then there would be no energy being supplied thus making it facilitated diffusion. Would this be the right approach?

Explanation / Answer

To determine the likely mode of transport of substance C we must first understand the concept of simple, facilitated and active transport. Since, A B and C are together in the solution we have to consider their presence and effect also on the type of transport of C.

From your explanation it is clear that you are quite acquainted with the concept of simple and facilitated diffusion.
