1. Deviated nasal septum (DNS) obliterates one of the two nasal passages. This mechanically obstructs air flow as well as clearance of nasal secretions, resulting directly or indirectly (congestion, frequent sinus infections, etc.) in difficult breathing.
2. The turns and twists increase the area of the surface with which air comes in contact before entering the lungs, allowing its equilibration with respect to humidity and temperature.
