Question

2. Briefly discuss the function of serous, mucous and cutaneous membranes Type of Membrane Function Serous Mucous: Cutaneous: E. ORGANS: THE SKIN (25 MIN) The skin has the following functions: a. Resistance to trauma, infections and other barrier functions b. Sensation c. Thermoregulation d. Vitamin D synthesis Discuss -for each one of the four functions listed above- how they are associated with the cells and properties of epithelial and connective tissues in the skin (See last week's lab for more info). 1. Discussion: Function Resistance to trauma, infections and other barrier functions Sensation Thermoregulation Vitamin D synthesis

Explanation / Answer

SEROUS MEMBRANE: they line several serous cavities which secrete lubricating fluid. This fluid reduces friction from muscle movement.

MUCOUS MEMBRANE: lines the body parts such as digestive tract, respiratory tract , urogenital tract and various MUCOUS secreting glands. It's main function is to lubricate and protect tissues.

CUTANEOUS MEMBRANE: it consists of the epidermis and out epithelium of skin, it has protective functions

Functions of skin

1. RESISTANCE TO TRAUMA AND BARRIER FUNCTIONS: This is mainly attritubuted to the the impermeable STRATUM CORNEUM made up of lipids. It prevents loss of water hence keeps skin hydrated.

2. SENSATION: It is due to presence of various sensory receptors in skin. Presence of hair follicles also plays a role.

3.THERMIREGULATION: Skin helps in maintaining temperature homeostasis by either conserving or losing heat.

4. VITAMIN D : Skin is the main source of vitamin D. Skin contains 7cholecalciferol which under the influence of sunlight changes into active form of vitamin D.
