Hands on Lab 7: Reflexes and Reactions Directions: You will complete a series of activities to help you better understand how messages are transmitted via our brain and spinal cord to our peripheral nervous system. You will need to find someone to help you complete this lab Preparation: Read Lab Exercises 16-20 or Textbook Chapters 11-13 to help you complete this lab Activity 1- Reflexes Part 1 Label the 5 parts of a Reflex Arc (Place answers into table below) 9 0 0 0 6 Complete the chart below by adding in the function of the 5 parts of a typical reflex arc Table Worth Up To 25 Points (5pts each part) Number Function 2. 3 4 5

Explanation / Answer

When a physician strikes the patellar tendon, the tendon fibers are stretched and activate the golgi tendon organ (receptor). (This mimics what would happen to the tendon if one were to fall over backwards.)

An action potential results, and is carried toward the spinal cord. Within the gray matter the sensory neuron synapses with an interneuron. The interneuron in turn synapses with one or more motor neurons, and an action potential is in turn initiated in the motor neuron(s).

The motor neurons carry an action potential to various leg muscles, which contract and cause your leg to extend (to prevent falling!).

Number Function 1. Sensory Receptors Responds to stimulus (change in external/internal environment); Distal end of dendrites, sensory structure; Initiate impulse via local depolarization (graded potential) 2. Sensory neuron Receptor to axon termination in CNS; Transmits afferent impulse 3.Interneuron Carries impulse within CNS. Sensory impulse to motor impulse; Direct (monosynaptic) or polysynaptic region in CNS 4. Motor neuron Carries impulses away from CNS. Efferent impulses from integration center to effector 5. Effector organ Anatomical structures by which animal responds (muscle, gland etc)
