Explanation / Answer
One of the ten essential principles for networking I would follow is 'give more importance to quality than quantity'.
I will apply this to myself by not networking with everyone I meet and discuss my career goals with them. I will prioritize the people I want to talk and seek advice. I will create certain metrics to identify the people I want to connect with and the people I want to stay away from. I will approach the right people with the right questions only because I cannot ask random questions to very experienced people. So in every activity of mine, I will give importance to quality over quantity.
Why is networking so important to job seekers?
Networking can give them more information on the approach to be followed to get a dream job in a dream company. A person can get a job easily by when someone in the company refers and says I know this person well and he is a very talented guy. This can happen only through networking. So the students need to build a good network along with just applying for jobs on the company portal.
With whom, where, and when should you network?
The people who are experts in the domain or area of my interest should be my target audience. The people who are in Human resource department of any company would also be my target audience. The networking platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, conferences, and career fairs are great places to network with the leaders and the right audience. We need to make sure that we are not very pushy and our approach should be very polite. We should disturb them when they are busy and it better to get their contact information and then write an email or send a text message to check when you can connect with them for a quick discussion.
Who are the best kinds of contact networks?
The best kinds of contact networks are the professional ones. The groups created on the platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter where the industry leaders and experts share their expertise and also the domain knowledge with everyone. These people can be of great help as they are willing to share their knowledge and also help people who want to build their career in the same industry or domain.
What kind of people should be in your network?
The people who are interested in the same industry or domain. The people who have the ability to influence other and also the people who can help me with my job search.
What is the biggest mistake a job seeker can make with networking?
Speaking to everyone without having a clear picture of who is the right person to share the information and seek advice is the biggest mistake one can do in networking. The value of the job seeker would decrease if that continues and the people will stop responding to them.
