Question

In this exercise, the amplitude of the action potential produced by the frog sciatic nerve increased when the stimulating voltage increased. How is this possible if the action potential of individual axons obey the all or none law? In this exercise, the amplitude of the action potential produced by the frog sciatic nerve increased when the stimulating voltage increased. In this exercise, the amplitude of the action potential produced by the frog sciatic nerve increased when the stimulating voltage increased. How is this possible if the action potential of individual axons obey the all or none law?

Explanation / Answer

Ans: According to the all or none law there should be a smallest amount of depolarization for the occurrence of an action potential and without attaining that level no impulse will be propagated. Changes occurring in the cell polarization will affect the signal propagation to the entire length of an axon. This suggests that in the presence of a stimulus, an action potential occurs and thus neuron is activated and propagate a signal through an axon away from the cell body, towards the synapse. Frog sciatic nerve shows multiple action potential and they have diverse neurons with different threshold in the sciatic nerve. Thus, as stated above, in the presence of a stimulus an action potential occurs and increases the amplitude of neurone and with further increase in the current more neurons are activated. Wave summation also explains this process i.e., muscle contraction strength can be increased by decreasing the time between the two impulses and muscle fibres do not get the time for relaxation and thus have a continuous wave contraction.
