Question
Please read the following and respond to the question: Peak Power, a medium-size hydroelectric power plant near Seattle, Washington, hires you as the HR consultant to design a new appraisal system. The plant's present 10- year old appraisal system considers the cumulative ratings over the years, for evaluating promotion or salary raise issues. Recent problems in other areas of HR management at the plant and the fear of potential lawsuits led Peak's president to the decision. What is your general evaluation of this appraisal system?Explanation / Answer
The followings represent the analysis of the appraisal system of Peak Power:
Cummulative Grading: The cummulative grading for the appraisal of employees is obsolete these days. It was generally done in order to keep the workforce of the Organisation, consistent with work and responsibilities to obtain high productivity and output. Now adays employees generally don't stay much longer in an organisation and switch from one job to another to meet their personal and societal goals. Thus it is imperative for this Organisation to abolish cummulative grading for appraisal of employees.
Employee Engagement: It is necessary for every organisation to engage its employees through various activities like social interactions, gatherings, event celebrations etc to bridge the gap between employees. This may help in combating the adverse effects of workforce diversity so that people can interact with each other without keeping any prejudices, differences etc in their mind. Peak Power does seem to suffer from the lack of employee engagement policies(not mentioned clearly but can be assumed)
Lawsuits: It is also quite evident that the employees could file legal complaints against the Organisation in order to pacify themselves from the cummulative ratings system or other discrimminations operational. This may lead to a havoc in the company's smooth operation and lead to different hurdles at micro-environment view of the Organisation. So it becomes imperative to cater to the needs of the employees by not following the practices presently operating in the Organisation.
The Organisation must also look for the changes in the followings (if possible) in order to keep their workforce intact:
1 Employee Training & Development
2 Employees Compensation
3 Employees grievance redressal and relations
4 Employees proper recruitment
5 Health Safety and Care for the Employees
