1. The American Basketball League (ABL) and the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) both folded after three seasons: the ABL in 1998, and the WUSA in 2003. Research the leagues, compare and contrast the reasons these two women’s professional sport leagues failed. Considering your research, do you see a way that one or both leagues could have succeeded? If so, how?.

2. What are two or three recent television rights deals that have been signed and what do you see are the advantages and disadvantages of such deals for the stakeholders involved?

3. Compare and contrast the interscholastic finances of both public schools and private schools

4. Looking at the current NCAA men’s Basketball scandal/corruption, changes are probably going to be made to help avoid future misgivings. Examine the scandal from four different stake holder positions and their managers, Athletic department (Athletic Director), whole university (University president & Board of Directors), NCAA (President) and NBA (League Commissioner). Act as if you are the manager from each stakeholder and write a plan of action providing details to prevent future corruption.

Explanation / Answer

ABL failed due to the loss it faced in the firs two seasons financially. They could not get the television exposure and sponsorship support and thus faced shortage of funds. They had big players in the team and paid them high salaries but in the third season declared bankruptcy. The other reason of its failure was its organizational structure which was based on single entity due to which the decsions of team operations were taken by the head office in California. They could have avoided this situation by organizing the funds adeqautely beforehand and creating a structure which would suit the team in the most effective way .

Wusa failed as a team because it did not have a planned legal structure that could attract investors, sponsors or fans and help them in multiplying their funds. There was no proper business plan or model. Leadership was lacking and thus professionalism could not be maintained. A disorganized structure lead to the failure hence framing the structure properly with each level being propely defined could acvoid the failure of the association.
