Explanation / Answer

The lung volumes increase by about 15% during exercises. During exercises, there is an increased production of carbon dioxide which stimulates respiratory center in the brain stem which in turn causes increase in both the rate and depth of inspiration. This serves to remove the excessive accumulation of carbon dioxide and it also supplies the much needed oxygen to the exercising muscles.
