She has had repeated eoispodes of tonsillitis, and her pediatrician suggest removal of her tonsils and adenoids. He further suggests that the surgery may cure her mouth-breathing problem. Why is this possible?

Explanation / Answer

Tonsillitis is often associated with inflammation of adenoids called as adenoiditis. Adenoids lie just posterior to the nostrils and when it gets inflamed as in adenoiditis, they block the entry of air through and from the nostrils. This results in mouth breathing. So, when a surgery is done for tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy is also performed which cures the mouth breathing problem.
