Question
The Question Physiology is about : In the last 20 years, there has been a lot of controversy over the use of anabolic androgen steroids in athletes to boost muscle mass and enhance athletic performance (think baseball). Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anabolic_steroid to read about the mechanism of action of these hormones. Do you think we ought to ban the use of these drugs in amateur athletes? Does your answer change if the question is asked about professional athletes (people who are being paid to do their sport)? Use what you have learned about the physiology of these hormones to support your answer.
Explanation / Answer
We do not ban the anabolic androgenic steroids because it is the case of interest of a person. However, we can ban on misuse and non-prescribed use of anabolic androgenic steroids.
That is why we cannot also ban the use of such steroids because of the case of professional athletes. They use for their better performance and through their interest.
The main unpleasant effects of short- and long-term anabolic androgenic steroids or AAS abuse that male athletes most frequently find an increase in sexual drive, the happening of acne vulgaris, augmented body hair and augmentation of aggressive behavior. Its uses upset the normal endogenous production of gonadotrophins and testosterone, increase of blood pressure and decrease in serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterols. The use of such steroids also causes atherosclerosis vasospasm, thrombosis. In adolescents, its uses impede the lengthening of bones, rapid bone maturation, more frequent and more duration of erections, and early sexual development. Therefore, we have to ban on use of anabolic androgenic steroids for adolescents and the non-medical or high use of anabolic androgenic steroids.
