Question
Americans are sometimes criticized for being too individualistic, and in particular for approaching moral issues with too great an emphasis on rights. Although we said that rights and duties are usually correlated with each other, what difference (if any) do you think would occur if Jefferson had written, "We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all people are created equal; that they owe duties of respect to all other persons, and are owed these duties in return"? Write down a list of duties that you believe all reasonable persons should recognize as absolute, that is, as having no justified exceptions. Is the list very long? Explain why your list is short or long, and defend your view against possible criticism.
Explanation / Answer
The constitution of each and every nation possess some fundamental duties that the citizens of the country should abide by and USA is not an exception. These duties are always not absolute because some of them has very less practical feasibility but some are quite fair and is expected from a citizen of the country. My list of absolute fundamental duties are:
1. The national flag and anthem should be respected
2. The essential ideals of secularism, democracy and non-violence should be followed and practiced.
3. Natural resources should be protected.
4. To preserve the culture and heritage
My list of fundamental duties is short because I feel that the other duties that are mentioned may look good theoretically but possess very less practical feasibility but the fundamental duties that I have mentioned should be absolute although individuals may differ. The basic respect should be given to the flag and the anthem and I believe that this should not have any criticism, the culture and heritage the nation possess should be preserved for our own benefit and hence natural resources should also preserved for the same cause.
