Question
We all have biases it is in our human nature. But if we are aware of our biases and why we have them we can better work on overcoming them, better understanding them, avoiding them or just staying away from certain situations that we are unable to handle. This project is an open forum and comes with no judgment. What I want from you is, to be honest, and open with yourself in this project. If you have ways you already deal with previous biases I would like you to add those, too. Remember this class is about growing and understanding yourself so that you can be the best helper possible. Knowing your limits is a key component. If you chose to write a paper I want 2 pages, at least. If you pick another form of medium then make it somewhat equal to 600 words or so. I am not picky about the specifics what I what from you is the insight and knowledge. I want you to think and explore inside yourself.Explanation / Answer
In your paper you can begin with your views about what is ethical and expected in practice the a psychological professional as n objective based on the class discussions, readings etc. then you can reflect and highlight about how far you see those qualities in yourself as a future expert, your points of unease, difficulty, in dealing with certa N types of clients such as children, or elderly, criminals, people of coloured races like Native Americans, etc.
For instance, you can start by describing in a sentence or two what you have heard about Native Americans as a group, any positive or negative experience which you have had with a member of the community and which has shaped your attitude towards the whole community. For instance, if you feel sympathetic towards them after reading and knowing about their political and cultural struggle in the American history, then are you likely to be biased in favour of reaching out or be ‘over-helpful’ to a Native American patient. Or if you charge your patients 50 dollars a session, but you know that your Patient comes from an economically weaker group, then how open would you be to reduce the fee or offer pro bono services.
Basically, you can break down the assignment question in terms of what yu ave learned about objectivity as an ethic in psychology and how far your personal attitudes, experiences and religious and cultural background may be aligned or in conflict with the ethical standards.
