Pre-conventional: This is the first stage of Kohlberg's moral development theory The individuals in this stage of morality adheres to strict obedience to rules and regulations, as they fear the punishments for not obeying the laws and rules. Hence, the motivation behind an individual of not texting while driving is adhering to rules of traffic that prohibits texting while driving, and avoiding the consequences due to it.

Conventional: At this stage of morality, the individuals view morality from the point of society. They obey rules and regulations, and accept authority to have good reputation in the society. They also believe that laws and orders, acceptance of authority is important to keep the society intact and disciplined. Hence, an individual would follow the rule of not texting while driving to keeping up his good reputation of responsible citizen or and to maintain the law and order of the society.

Post conventional: In this stage of morality, the focus of morality shifts from society to self. Individuals thinks from their view point to be morally correct. The ethical principles followed at this stage is mostly universal and non-authoritarian. They give their own interpretation to be morally responsible. Hence, an individual in this stage of moral reasoning would avoid texting and driving because she / he doesn't wants to put the life of others and self in danger.
