Question

5. When watching modern "kid movies" like Shrek, you'll frequently see scenes that are completely "kid-friendly" on the surface, but which have a deeper, non-literal meaning that is less kid-appropriate. These types of scenes are often inserted in order to appeal to adult audiences who are inevitably forced to watch such movies and are also looking to be entertained. What is one piece of (scientific, not anecdotal) evidence that supports the idea that young children are sometimes unable to go beyond the literal meaning of an utterance?

Explanation / Answer

Cognitive development in children is a combination of biological maturity and enviroment influence. Children construct a mental image and develop an understanding of the world around them by adjusting the difference between what they know and the new information they receive. The same idea is implied while viewing a movie. Concepts like subliminal perception is highly used to influence the impressional mind of children. The information being shown in the movie may be inaudible to their conscious mind, but is perceived and recorded by the unconscious psyche. For example,Shrek along with his friend Donkey embarks on a journey to rescue Fiona. The movie revolves around a male figure fighting and displaying his heroic acts to save the damsel in distress i.e. Fiona. Not only it unconsciously inserts the idea that male character is the saviour of the female community in the society(patriarchy), but also that masculinity is only displayed , if the male figure fights others in order to achieve his goal (saving Fiona). This is evident of the idea that children are unable to perceive the latent meaning, and perceive the animated character as it is.

Another evidence comes from Piaget's theory of cognitive developmemt in children. For exapmle, for a young child aged between two to four, it becomes difficult to differentiate between the reality and animated existence of the characters in movie. In Pre-Operational stage of cognitive development, Piaget explains that children believe that animated character or objects have a life life properties in them and are able to act and behave like another human. This process is called Animism, which explains how young children are unable to go beyond the literal meaning of an utterance, rather believe them as it is.
