Question
Giving Comment for following information In the text Moral Action, it discusses how morality involves doing the right thing. But, social influences can keep you from doing the right thing. In the bottom of the paragraph it discussed how during the Holocaust, soldiers and guards believed they were doing the right thing due to corrupt social influence. So outside influences can change your moral action. Blooms statement is another good example because people tend to change their moral action to conform to the social norm. It is also believed that what is usually a social norm tends so be the right thing to do. But again as we look at the Holocaust, the social norm isn't always doing the right thing. So, social influences can affect your moral action on doing the right thing.Explanation / Answer
I think the statement about morality makes sense and it’s true that morality do not work the same for everyone. Soldiers follow the deontological ethics where they hold their duty above everything, so killing makes them happy because they do it to protect whoever belongs to them. This act is wrong in the eyes of Utilitarian ethics which would say maximize the benefit and reduce harm. Offerings on the other hand, is about offering animals, birds or even humans to Gods thinking that the act would bring more blessings but for the one who is killed during the offering, it’s a life-long suffering. People act according to the social norm because they want to be inclusive but then it’s all about gaining majority and the majority determines the social norms and set ethical measures. The minority have no other go but to sail along. So, what’s moral or ethical in one’s eye may not be ethical in another’s eye thus eliminating the chances of universal ethical practices.
