Question

nvent a means of keeping track of your inferences.

Use deductive elimination to infer the answer.

The conditions are as follows:

Five racing drivers, Adam, Ben, Charles, Doug, and Edgar compete in six (6) races. Statements summarizing the results of all six (6) races are listed:

Ben always finishes ahead of Charles.
Adam finishes either first or last.
Edgar finishes either first or last.
There are no ties in any race.
Every driver finishes each race.

If Edgar finishes two places ahead of Charles in the first race,
all of the following statements will be true EXCEPT:

C. Charles finishes ahead of Ben

A. Charles finishes two places ahead of Adam.

Explanation / Answer

Option C is the right answer

This is because if Edgar is in the first position followed by Ben. One of the inferences state that Ben would finish the race before Charles. Charles is in the third place as Edgar is the first to finish the race. Since Ben finishes immediately after Edgar, he is in the second position which ultimately makes him ahead of Charles. Thus Charles cannot finish before Ben.
