Explanation / Answer

I am familiar with Behavioral interview, Structured interview and Problem-solving/Case interview.

Based on my experience and personality, I feel the need to practice more for Behavioral interview. Behavioral interview is based fundamentally on the principle that past performance is best indicator of future behavior. Thus, employers look for performances which are closer to what is required for the job at hand. Examples of skills evaluated include intellectual competence, leadership, team building, communication, flexibility, team engagement, persuasion, conflict resolution along with the technical skills. So to ace these interviews, I feel the need to identify skills and indicators required for the job, and then reflect on the past experience where these skills are demonstrated.

STAR is an acronym for structuring responses in an interview, typically in a behavioral type of interview. Stands for Situation, Tasks one is charged to do, Action taken and Result of the action. This comprehensively captures the response required for a situational type of questions in interview. Since experiences must be shared, articulating the experiences while showcasing the strengths demonstrated is critical and thus STAR framework helps in structuring the responses.

Example of application of STAR method to share conflict on the job:

This is for sharing an experience where I was once handling sales queries over phone. As part of customer service, one of the customer made an angry and upset call regarding delayed delivery of his online transaction without any notifications. As a customer representative, I was entrusted to resolve their concerns to their utmost satisfaction and meet the promises made to them. I immediately took note of the details of the transaction, and researched internally on the cause of the delay. Due to an error at warehouse, the shipment was not dispatched beyond its promised date. I followed up with the brand folks and got the shipment from their warehouse directly. But before getting this done, had to take multiple permissions to get exemption on incurring higher shipping costs. Shipping directly from brand warehouse is costly and in conflict with cost reduction objective, but to keep the promise made to customer, decided to incur the additional cost to keep long term relationship with customer alive. Customer got the shipment in 2 days post the call, and was very happy on responsive nature.

When illegal questions are asked during an interview, first evaluate the question in relationship with the job being interviewed for. Also, ask the interviewer to explain the relationship of the question with the job. And also, confidently state that the question doesn’t adversely impact the performance on the job irrespective of what the response is. Also, it is better to notify the HR agency or HR representative about the incident.
