Question

How would you respond to the following?

To me, my thoughts of my self come from experiences, what I believe, and how I view the world. I always considered my self a good person. I like to help people, be kind, and show people that everyone has a friend. I always thought "self" was who you are. What makes you, you. I do believe that some parts of your self never change. Things you experience in life, how you act, and how you feel can be hard to change. So some of your self must be with you when you are born and does not change throughout your life, you just grow and understand it better. I do believe that your core self is your identity. It's what makes you see the world and things in it the way you do. Descartes says that if he can think then that is what makes him stay the same. I agree with him because if you are thinking about you and your experiences and how you view the world then you are thinking about you.

Explanation / Answer

Descartes view on personal identity focussed more on the school of dualism, with him asserting that consciousness and self are distinct from the brain. While he could doubt the existence of all material objects, including his own body, he could not rule out the existence of his mind. This conclusion, in my view, cannot be applied to support the continuity of self. Descartes merely stated that the fact that he can think proves that he exists.
