Question
You are the chief of police. Your agency and federal law enforcement disrupted a bombing of a school by a radical fringe group. It comes to light that your officers violated the wiretap law in your state. The information from the wiretap identified the location, date, and time the bomb was to detonate. Print, radio, and television media descends on your city and demands that you defend the actions of your investigators. Realizing that your investigators saved lives would you discipline them? Defend your position.
Explanation / Answer
Any ethical principles would appreciate if lives are saved because an action will be ethical only if it benefits many. In this case, although the police investigators used an alternate way which is not supported by the law, they were only investigating the criminals and not ordinary people. Some times police officers use deception to get the truth from the offenders by lying to them. Wire tapping the criminals fall under this category and shouldn't be treated as breach of law. So, I won't to disciplinary action on the officers because they have not only saved lives but also prevented material loss and saved the reputation of the police deportment.
