Question

For this final discussion, I want to look at your knowledge of methods. I want you to do two things. First, create a very brief study idea. For example, I came up with this one A researcher wishes to examine whether people high or low in self-esteem react differently to different kinds of therapy for depression. She takes a sample of 120 people (half have high self-esteem and half have low self-esteem) and randomly assigns them to one of three conditions (humanistic therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and a control group of no therapy. She records their level of depression after 3 months of therapy. Scores can range from 1 (very little depression) to 30 (extreme depression)."

Explanation / Answer

Creating a research idea:

The following study is aimed to explore the role of positive interventions such as through outside classroom discussions, film screenings in the related academic topic, on the performance of college graduate students during the final academic exams. In order to study the phenomenon of positive intervention, the research will randomly select 40 students from the Humanities and 40 students from the Science departments. The selected participants would be then asked to participate in an in campus experiment where each group of the sample would be randomly assigned to the experimental group and the control group. Both the groups will be exposed to the same study material on the basic level English grammar, with the addition that students in the experimental condition would be involved in study mentor ship groups held by the researchers themselves. At the end of a three weeks learning programme, both the groups of participants would be administered the same test of English grammar. Thus, in this way, the exposure to study help in the mentorship groups outside the classroom would be the independent variable in order to measure the effect of positive intervention on students’ learning, the actual performance on the grammar test after three weeks would be the dependent variable. In addition, factors such a study age, IQ level, level of motivation, ethnic, linguistic background, basic knowledge of English language, will be kept constant in order to avoid the effect of these confounding variables.
