Question

Given below is the crashing data for a project along with other data. The project completion time is 20 davs. Determine: (a) the crash slope (i.e crash cost/day) for all activities, (b) the normal total project cost, (c) prioritized the list of activities for crashing from best to worst, (d) the best activity to crash if the project has to be completed in 19 days and alternative critical paths, if any, (e) the earliest time the project can be completed, and (f) the least cost of early completion. Explanation / Answer

1. Crash slope for an activity = crash cost / crash days

For A it is 10-14/5-4 = 4

For B it is 30-34/5-3 = 2

For C it is 12-8/4-2 = 2

For D it is 12-18/6-4 = 3

For E it is 52-40 /3-2 =12

For F it is 30-20 /4-3 =10

(b) Normal cost = sum of all activities' normal cost = 120

(c) Critical path is ABDF, hence only these activities can be crashed.

Based on the cost of crashing per day the sequence of priority is B,D,A,F

(d) Normal duration is 20 days. If any activity that has to be crashed for 1 day ( for completing it in 19 days) it will be B. Alternative critical path of duration 19 days will be ACDF.

(e) Earliest time the project can be completed is 15 days after crashing A for 1, B for 1, D for 2 and F for 1 days.

(f) Additional cost incurred will be 1x4+1x2+2x3+1x10 = 22

Total cost = 120+22 = 142
