Question 3 [3 points]
Below are three fragments of conversation between Lara, a child (C), and an adult (A).
The fragments come from three different recordings made at different ages of the child.
Can you put them in chronological order starting with the one you think was produced when the child was youngest (e.g., Transcript X, Transcript Z, Transcript T)? Say which stage the child is in for each one, and what the evidence is for your chronological order (e.g., “Transcript T – the child is in the later multiword stage; all utterances are either completely or almost adult like”).
Transcript A
A: What's the matter?
C: That Lara bin
A: That Lara's bin? It is not Lara's bin. Whose bin is it? C: Mummy's bin.
A: That’s right.
C: Mummy.
A: What?
C: That bottle in there.
A: You want your bottle in there?
C: That the toys.
A: Get some toys out of your box and put them in then.
C: Toys.
C: I sit down there.
A: Do you want to do the jigsaw?
C: Mummy do it.

A: Gone now.
Transcript B

C: Yes.
A: All gone. That's better, isn't it?
C: Yes.
A: That's it.
C: See.
A: See?
A: Yes.
A: You can see.
C: See.
A: That's the hen.
C: Mummy.
A: That's right: Mummy hen. And what's them? What's them?

C: There.
A: Okay.
C: Mummy to play. Play lady.

C: No. No.
A: Okay. Come on then.
C: Mummy sit down.
Explanation / Answer
The chronological order for the transcripts would be:
1) Transcript B: The child is in the holophrase or one word sentence phase. This is reflected in the child's utterances which are all single words. The utterances are accompanied by gestures which could be understood from the dialogues which seem to be abstract without the mother's explanations.
2) Transcript A: The child is in the multiple word stage. This is evident from the child's sentences which include a subject and a predicate. Even though there are grammatical errors, the indication behind it is quite clear.
3) Transcript C: The child is in the more complex grammatical structure stage. Here, the child learns to use elements of grammar in order to make more complete sentences. In the above transcript the child has used conjunctions at this stage.
