Question
"Groupthink" occurs when there is an effort to move stalled decisions and avoid conflict, which can result in possible poor decision-making outcomes. Have you ever been a part of a negotiation where "groupthink" or something similar occurred? If yes, describe the event, your feelings before, during, and after the event, and mention what you might have done differently. If no, explain an example of something you have observed that used "groupthink". Explain, in detail, the event and situation and anything you may have done differently.
Explanation / Answer
Answer: One such situation which I faced was when I was a part of a group project in my school days. We had to prepare a project as a group. We gathered together for discussion on how we were supposed to move forward and what all responsibilities each one of us will undertake. One of the students in our group was the topper of our class and we all considered him as an expert in the field of academics. I prepared few strategies for proceeding with the project and planned to present them during the discussions. I felt confident that they were good strategies and can help us to get good grades. But when we started the group discussion, the topper started to speak and present his views and everyone seemed to agree with him. This made me feel nervous about my views which were different from that of the topper. I felt that if I will say anything against his views then people may ridicule me as after all he was the class topper. This made me to refrain myself from interrupting in between and we all unanimously accepted the proposal of the topper. After we submitted the project it did not fetched us the grades we expected. The remarks of the teacher indicated that many of my strategies were right and if they had been implemented we could have got better grades. I felt sorry that I did not speak and succumbed to the group think. If I will fall under such situation again I will definitely not hesitate in expressing my view even if there is a confrontation.
