The interaction effect in psychology means that within a given situation there can be more than one independent varibale, whose synergistic effect work either as greater force on the dependent varibale or lessens the effect.

For instance, in 8(a) the interaction effect of the drug is better with the full stomach, and helps to better assuage the pain in the patients, and with empty stomach it worsens the pain.

And in 8(b) the interaction effect is the same as above, but there is a higher degree of pain experiences by the patients owing to the mentioning of the fact that they are different types of patients.
