Question
Up to 25 percent of the cells ATP is used to run sodium potassium pump which transport sodium outside of the city up against its concentration gradients and potassium is sad to celll against its concentration gradient. Without the resulting sodium and potassium gradient Neurons and muscle cannot function properly if a person is poison was cyanide they cannot generate ATP and died within a few minutes in this scenario what would happen to sodium and potassium concentration across a cell membrane? with sodium be higher outside to sell and potassium will be higher inside the cell sodium will be higher inside the cell in potassium which the higher outside the cell sodium and potassium would reach equilibrium sodium and potassium concentration of sodium and potassium concentration
Explanation / Answer
A person consumed poison cannot generate ATP and dies with in few minutes. This is because of the arrest of Na+/K+ pump. When cyanide is consumed the sodium concentration increases outside the cell and potassium concentration increases inside the cell and high potassium concentration inside the cell causes the fluids to move inside the cell and the cells burst out. Moreover the sodium ions excess out side the cell should transport glucose along with them but they cannot enter the cell thus also the glucose cannot enter and synthesize ATP. Hence, by block of Na+/K+ pump, synthesis of ATP arrested leading to death of the person.
