Question
Below are three fragments of conversation between Lara, a child (C), and an adult (A). The fragments come from three different recordings made at different ages of the child. Can you put them in chronological order starting with the one you think was produced when the child was youngest (e.g., Transcript X, Transcript Z, Transcript T)? Say which stage the child is in for each one, and what the evidence is for your chronological order (e.g., “Transcript T – the child is in the later multiword stage; all utterances are either completely or almost adult like”).

Explanation / Answer
The given transcripts comprise of a language development phase whereby the child uses multiple word utterances to communicate. The child begins to use words with little intonation in both and little pauses. Often this is sone as if there is no correlation between the two three words expressed and they are in isolation. When two word utterances such as baby hen and sit down are used, it i soften labeled as telegaphic speech. This is the beginning of communication and expression for a child. Sloely this is taken over by full blown development of syntax in language and the child begins to communicate in more complex formats.
