Question

Developmental psychology:

Analyze the answers you get for each metaphor in terms of the presence or absence of hypothetical/deductive thinking, differentiation vs. globality, and egocentricity (one perspective explored) vs. multiple perspectives.

Metaphor 1:cat feet means the fog moves in stealthily and silently like a cat moves.

Metaphor 2: eyes were candles means that you could feel and see that her eyes were the one thing that most expressive and showed that she was alive, present and bright in an otherwise misty serene environment where not much detail could be seen.

Metaphor 3: banged town gives the impression that the town's been hit hard by the festivities and weather. ( This one was kind of hard to understand but that's my best guess at what "banged town" might mean. ??

Metaphor 4: possessed all earth and air means that for a short time the car took over the environment/space and time so it was only thing you could see, hear and feel before it moved in to background/distance again like a "droning bee"

Metaphor 5:frowning arch creates the feeling that the door/entrance is ominous or menacing, dark and uninviting

(Answer) (1) Cat feet – Globality – This metaphor simply means to be stealthy. It is globally known or rather it is common knowledge that a cat is quite silent on their feet and is able to be stealthy to sneak up on their prey. Therefore, “cat feet” means to be stealthy.

(2) Eyes were candles – Deductive thinking – “Eyes as Candles” is an expression from a song by ‘passion pit’. The term is used in the song in order for it to entail that just like a candle lights up the way in the dark, so do the eyes help one to notice and observe things that would have otherwise been unknown.

(3) Banged town – Multiple perspectives – On a day of festivities like Cinco de Mayo, a town parade or other such festivities, it is noticed by several that the town is generally messy just like a house after a party. A banged town would, therefore, mean a messy town. This might be indicative of a mess in terms of garbage, crime or other chaotic elements.

(4) Possessed all earth and air – Multiple perspectives – It is generally the belief that richer individuals have a lot of money, own a lot of things and might even possess all the earth and air. Such a common belief leads to rendering such an expression the meaning that “possessed all earth and air” might refer to the extensive possessions of a rich man.

(5) Frowning arch – Deductive thinking – One generally wears a frown on the forehead when one is angry, anxious, scared or even shocked. This means that “frowning arches” might simply refer to a group of people who are not particularly in a cheerful mood.
