Question
Marr (1982) identified three levels at which we can describe information processing systems, including the human mind: the computational level, the algorithmic/representation level, and the implementation level For each of the research questions below indicate which of Marr's three levels it addresses, and give a 1-2 sentence justification for your answer. If you feel that a question relates to more than a single level, explain your reasoning Part A (1.5 points) The theory that the release of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain signals the discrepancy between obtained and expected reward, and modulates plasticity in recently active synapses in the striatum, to enable reward based learning. Part B (1.5 points) The idea that the act of seeing involves continuously predicting the visual features of the world before they are seen, and therefore that the visual cortex solves a problem of prediction rather than direct perception.Explanation / Answer
Note: This response is in UK English, please paste the response to MS Word and you should be able to spot discrepancies easily. You may elaborate the answer based on personal views or your classwork if necessary.
(Answer) (A) Implementation Level – Because, this level is about how the representation and the effects of a certain calculation can be realised physically. In this case, dopamine creates a certain discrepancy in the brain which causes the subject to be pleased about a certain reward even though it isn’t adequate. The statement above talks about how the calculation is realised physically through the effects of the neurotransmitters in the brain.
(B) Algorithmic/ Representational Level – Because Algorithmic or representational level, talks about how the input translates itself into an output by the algorithm it would use. In the case above, the prediction is translated into a direct perception through the information absorbed by the visual cortex.
