(Answer) 1.Describe a time when you engaged in destructive interpersonal conflict.
John Doe is a man who is employed in a multinational company. John is doing very well for himself and is amongst a few candidates who are up for a promotion. John and his friends at work are supportive of each other, even though they are contenders. However, James is a colleague who is quite hostile and exhibits traits of carrying out unhealthy competition. He has created false rumours and even told the boss a few things about John’s conduct and personal life that are not true. This interpersonal conflict got destructive because James tried to sabotage John and adopt unethical techniques to stop John from getting the promotion.
2.What characteristics made it destructive?
Sabotage, defamation, unethical behaviour and unlawful conduct are the characteristics that made the tryst destructive. Furthermore, the situation literally was destroying John’s chances of getting a promotion at work.
3.How would you classify your orientation to conflict?
John was intrinsically a logical individual. He was always the kind of person who would get to the root of the problem. He believed in finding the true cause of the rumours and bringing the truth into the light for the people involved in this situation.
4.Describe how this influenced your response to the conflict.
John found out through some of his loyal colleagues that, James had been spreading false rumours. He found out that these rumours were about to affect the boss’ decision about the promotion. John then decided to talk to his boss, HR and James while in the same room. He felt that he would have to dismiss the rumours and confront James all at once and in the presence of witnesses.
5.Reviewing the conflict management skills in the text reading, which conflict management
skill (passive aggression, lose-lose, win-lose, win-win, exit response, neglect response, loyalty response, voice response) could have been applied to the situation?
Voice response entails dealing with conflict and disagreements through open communication and directly dealing with the issue. Since conflict can either be managed well or poorly based on the method and the outcome, a voice response is most apt for such a situation.
6.How might this have helped to make the conflict more constructive?
The criterion for a voice response is that individuals are needed to be honest with each other. Furthermore, when presented with honesty, it is also necessary to be appreciative of the trait and not disparage a person. In this case, John was open and believed in open communication. Also, the HR rep and the boss were appreciative of the way John handled the situation with decorum.
