Mr. Chen is beginning his second year of teaching sixth grade in a low-income area. He has always been driven by goals and is trying to help his students learn to set and achieve goals, but his students didn't respond well to his performance goal orientation last year. Mr. Chen recently revisited his educational psychology text from college and read the chapter about motivation. Now he wants to change the goal orientation for his teaching and help his students work toward mastery goals. What should he do to achieve this goal?

In the initial program carried out by mr Chen, he had attempted that the students would be learning to achieve goals as after setting them. Though, he noticed that there was not much response in the orientation of performance goal setting. One of the most important reasons for the same might be that students were not aware as to why they were performing those tasks and what it would yield them in future. Considering the importance of motivations in carrying out various tasks, it could be understood that mr Chen has not provided any significant motivations in this case that would be driving the children.
As such, these children are from lower SES, and might not be having very high intrinsic motivation. Due to the conditions prevelant in their area. As a result, in order to drive actions, it is important that extrinsic motivation be provided to these children. One of the best forms in this case would be to attain mastery in one particular skill, excel in it and bring about improvement in their socio economic status. When pitching for the mastery goals, mr Chen requires to emphasise on the benefits of mastery in a skill and how it could help in providing for themselves and their family. These children need to know an outcome,that would be favourable not only for themselves but also their families. Hence, mr Chen requires to design a presentation or speech in such a manner that it would elaborate on the extrinsic motivation, the housing and better clothing conditions, so that the children have the drive to learn and achieve those goals.
