Question

Scenario

You are David Pogue, host of PBS’s MAKING STUFF series and technology blogger for the NYTimes (in fact, he recently left his post at the Times.) You’ve just received a new gadget that is not yet available to the public. It’s called “Z” and it was put out by “Mundane Industries.”

Assignment

Length: 450 - 550 words

Your task is to write a post reviewing “Z” for your blog. Before starting your assignment, spend some time looking over David Pogue’s Blog (http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/). You’ll use Pogue’s review format as a guide, along with chapters 26 and 27 of Technical Communication. Remember, this is a review of the gadget, which means that the reader should get the sense you’ve personally tested this thing out. Your review should not sound like promotional material whose aim is to get the reader to buy the gadget.

I am not providing you with any information about Z or Mundane Industries. Use your imagination and creativity to think up a “dream gadget” you wish existed. You are invited to be as creative and imaginative as you like, but be sure that the clarity of your writing doesn’t suffer for it. Before sitting down to write your review, I recommend spending some time brainstorming an idea for a gadget.

In your review, be sure to do the following: Content

Clearly describe what your gadget does and how much it costs

Explain who the target audience for the gadget is

Describe some of the gadget’s strengths

Describe some of the gadget’s weaknesses

In your conclusion, make a recommendation to consumers about whether the gadget, overall, is worth the price

Form

Include the most important information in the early paragraphs

Write sentences and paragraphs that are short and to the point

Write in an appropriate tone

Explanation / Answer

Many people asked me lots of questions regarding how they would monitor and control the way kids use the gadgets as the parents are becoming helpless in doing it. This is because of the long hour screen time the children have which affects their academic performance, social skills and their health.
Parents, don’t worry, the redeemer is already here to help you with all your problem. We’ve got a panacea for all the troubles we experience with the kids. Stop, what am I talking about? Relax folks, here I present you ‘Z’. I was amazed to look at a gadget that would revolutionize the way people would use it to control their kids’ screen time.
Z is an electronic gadgets with the capability of recognising your neural impulse thus changing it into a command to stop or proceed with the present task or even completely shut down with a warning message. To put it simply, one could synchronize their eye movements with different signals such as frowning, widening the eye etc. It could also track one's lip movements to read the command. Once Z recognises one's command, it would lock down the battery thus making it dead. Once the parent change their facial expression again, the gadget would come to life again.
Another important feature is that one need not be around the gadget instead they could do it from a distant place by sending their facial expression as an image which will be matched with the already stored image thus shutting the gadget down. One could ask what if someone else does the expression? The answer is that it reads the entire face even from a long distance of 5 meters. We could set the controller's and the controlled.
It's priced between 750 - 1000 dollars which seems to be a reasonable price which would do the job without the child knowing that you are doing it. So, I would say the price is still fine.
Parents are the ones who could use it and for the one's who are not yet parent think of becoming one because you will need all the fun in your life and kids will give you the same.
The gadget looks pretty much like the usual tablet and it's also available in a phone size thus giving variety. The tablet version has an 8 inch display with three sensors that would capture all the elements of the facial expression for a faultless functioning. It's got a 4 GB ram that equals the PC for an uncompromising performance.
Overall, the gadget is an essential one that should be in a parent's gadget list. It's also worth the price as it would eliminate lots of argument and resentment. It would also give the user a new experience and help the child limit their screen time and help them improve in their academic and social life and health.
