Question

In Items #1-5, Sonja and Trey advance arguments about creating a National Muslim Registry. Considering each item independently of the others, mark Items #1-5 accordingly: a) The conclusion follows necessarily from the given statements. b) The conclusion contradicts the given statements. c) The conclusion neither follows necessarily nor contradicts the given statements.

(1) SONJA: Trey opposes creating a National Muslim Registry, which would require a stronger screening process for Muslims entering our country. Yet during World War II, the Cold War, and post-9/11, the United States implemented such measures to protect national security. Because we have strengthened our vetting process for immigrants in the past, we should create a National Muslim Registry.

a)The conclusion follows necessarily from the given statements.

b)The conclusion contradicts the given statements.

c)The conclusion neither follows necessarily nor contradicts the given statements.

(2) SONJA: As we all know, the number of radical Islamic terrorist attacks has grown significantly, both domestically and internationally. It is obvious that our current screening process has enabled these attacks. Although I regret having to say this, Trey’s opposition to the National Muslim Registry leaves us but one conclusion: Trey supports radical Islamic terrorism.

a)The conclusion follows necessarily from the given statements.

b)The conclusion contradicts the given statements.

c)The conclusion neither follows necessarily nor contradicts the given statements.

(3) SONJA: Trey has also said that the United States should not foster Islamophobia and discrimination against Muslims. This is true. We should promote religious freedom and tolerance for all. But don’t be deceived by Trey’s appeals to religious freedom. Muslims constitute a high national security risk, and should be documented in a National Muslim Registry.

a)The conclusion follows necessarily from the given statements.

b)The conclusion contradicts the given statements.

c)The conclusion neither follows necessarily nor contradicts the given statements.

(4) TREY: I’m sorry that Sonja feels that way about the issue. Even though we should remain vigilant against terrorism in this country, and many people believe radical Islam is at the center of these terrorist attacks, we should still oppose a National Muslim Registry. To implement such a policy would violate due process and, therefore, be unconstitutional.

a)The conclusion follows necessarily from the given statements.

b)The conclusion contradicts the given statements.

c)The conclusion neither follows necessarily nor contradicts the given statements.

(5) TREY: Many experts say that the economic and human resources required to create a National Muslim Registry make it unfeasible. The United States should only adopt policies that it can implement and enforce. Thus, we ought to oppose a National Muslim Registry.

a)The conclusion follows necessarily from the given statements.

b)The conclusion contradicts the given statements.

c)The conclusion neither follows necessarily nor contradicts the given statements.

Explanation / Answer

Note: This response is in UK English, please paste the response to MS Word and you should be able to spot discrepancies easily. You may elaborate the answer based on personal views or your classwork if necessary.

(Answer) (1) A – Because the Registry and stronger vetting processes would both require stronger restrictions. Since both ideas seem to be of a similar nature, the conclusion follows the given statement.

(2) B – Just because Trey does not support stronger vetting (which doesn’t really seem to be working), that does not mean that he supports terrorism. It could probably mean that he might want to explore other avenues to combat terrorism.

(3) C – Because it is the perception of news reports that have made terrorism exclusive to Islam. The truth is that terrorism is when any person simply chooses to terrorize the innocent to meet their own agenda with fanatic beliefs as their tool. Therefore this statement is true if you go by the perceptions created by the left and this statement is also false if you go by the true definition of terrorism.

(4) A – Because a biased vetting process would actually be unconstitutional. Vetting should be equal for all and the denial of entrance into the US should be for a valid reason and not because of one’s religious beliefs.

(5) A – If a policy cannot be afforded then it simply shouldn’t be adopted.
