Question
The Prompt: Drawing or Painting Superior?
Painting is widely regarded as the most popular artistic medium and is the one that most people associate with the practice of visual art. However, drawing is often the first expression of an artist’s idea. Does this mean that painting or drawing is more superior as an art medium?
Consider that an initial sketch or a doodle on a napkin could hold more insight into the idea in its pure state than a carefully refined or labored print or painting.
How does this affect your decision? Find examples of an artist’s idea or design becoming more valuable than the finished work (some include Sol lewitt, Jeff Koons and Christo).
Explanation / Answer
In my opinion, drawing is the highest form of arts as it needs more creativity and brain work in drawing the picture. Painting does the beautification task and make it more aesthetic. Today, one who draws also uses the Paint to bring out the picture innovatively.
Drawing is the first hand skill that requires lots of thinking and imagination unless the artist just replicates an existing image. I would say drawing something without any model is the highest form of art as it brings out creativity, thinking pattern, aesthetic sense and at times social responsibility.
For example, the balloon series of Monkey, Rabbit and Swan by Jeff Koons provide a perfect example for abstract works that needs lots of creativity. Sol Lewitt's art works that focus on the patterns invite the viewers to ponder and find their own meaning.
In both case the original idea is costlier and more valuable than the finishes products because thinking and designing took more time to bring things to reality.
