Question
In the mid-2000s, a female high school student who was openly gay was asked to change clothes away from the other girls in her class. Several of her classmates complained to the teacher because they felt uncomfortable. The girl complained because her individual rights were being violated as she was singled out. There is a tension here between utilitarian and Kantian ethics (meaning that they come down on different sides of the answer). What is the moral dilemma here? Describe the moral reasoning from both points of view.
Explanation / Answer
The situation is very complex and in this context there was not reason to be singled out ,as the girl has not made any advances and taking into consideration her feelings that she was singled out is not a healthy approach of treating a person.. The teacher should amicably find a solution and find a way where the other girls are also comfortable and at the same time not hurting the fellings of the other girl. They could have allotted two changing rooms or different timings to protect the situation.
