Question
Jenna appears to be a very efficient and conscientious employee. She works very hard, has positive reviews from her peers and her customers, as well as by staff from other offices within the organization. She has a reputation for professionalism and excellent customer service. Her direct supervisor is a bit removed from her day-to-day duties and does not understand the extent of her job responsibilities. He has no negative remarks, however. His direct supervisor (the head supervisor), is even more unaware. He frequently travels because of his job responsibilities. The head supervisor was not involved in Jenna's hiring process, as he usually is, because of job responsibilities that called him away during the time when she was hired. Each time there is a vacancy in her office, the head supervisor fills the position with young (under 25), slim, female employees. Most seem quite capable of performing their job responsibilities, but some do not. Despite her good reviews and work performance, Jenna is eventually terminated by the head supervisor. While she is unclear as to the reason, she suspects that it might have something to do with her age (35) and possibly her weight, because this supervisor has often spoken in staff meetings about the image of the office. What could Jenna do? As an I/O psychologist working or consulting for this company, what would you recommend to the head personnel at this company? How might this be different if the head supervisor was also head personnel of the entire company?
Explanation / Answer
Different organizations have different requirements for hiring process, in this situation the hiring was done without the presence or awareness of the head,so jenna was hired. If the head personnel is employing according to age ,i would recommend saying that there is not much difference in employing 25-35 years of age and it is the outcome of the employee that is looked into not the outward appearance that matters.more over jenna has a good track record of perfomance, the image of the office should not be solely on the outwards presence of the employees. In this situation jenna need not be terminated but could be assigned to another department thus retaining a good employee. The actual reason hs to be known from the head supervisor for termination,it may not be just the body image alone which is being assumed in this case.
