Question

Describe Behavioral Nutrition. What are some of the effects of diet on mental health? On physical health? Consider the epidemic of anorexia nervosa in post-cold-war Russia, brought about etiologically just as if it were a bacterial infection or viral infection. How have Americans spread eating disorders throughout the former Soviet Union (hint: consider the fashion industry and the new freedom to advertise – as well as who is modeling clothing for both males and females.) Discuss the differences in the concept of "eating healthfully" contrasting 1950's ideas of the food pyramid with today's considerations. Are the baby-boomers who followed their pediatrician's nutritional advice and school cafeteria and elementary school teacher's lectures suffering for their "butterfat past"? Describe atherosclerosis and what can be done to change eating habits to reverse high cholesterol levels.

Explanation / Answer

Behavioural Nutrition is the conscious cognitive choices related to nutrition, such as meal choices, quantitiy choices etc. that a person makes. This decision is framed by a person's biological, anthropological, economic, psychological, socio-cultural and home-economics factors.

The effects of diet on mental and physical health: A good physical health is maintained only by good diet. A balanced diet gives strength, agility, coordination, endurance, speed and higher level of performance in a person. It also a direct relationship with mental health. Mental illnesses pertaining to memory and learning can be benefitted from the right diet. Some of these illnesses are Alzheimer's disease, depression, schizophrenia, etc.

The Post-Cold War and the epidemic of eating disorders throughout Russia: Post cold war, Russia came under huge influence of the U.S. and tried apeing them. The U.S. advertisements portraying skinny models to be the perfect looking people made everyone idealise them. This has led to behavioural modelling and self-harming attitude in people. Not only this, the entire media has played a significant role in influencing people, especially young girls towards Anorexia Nervosa.

The concept of eating healthy includes a variety of nutritious foods and drinks to be taken daily, in correct intervals maintaining the desired calorie levels. The food pyramid followed in 1950's consisted of the big four categories namely, vegetable and fruits, milk, meat and cereals and bread. However, this pyramid has faced certain criticism with regard to the emphasis it places on the nutritive values. For example, the pyramid suggested more vegetables and fruits and less meat and bread. After much considerations and re-considerations, today a healthy diet consists of fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins and dairy.

Even though butter helps in growth, a butterfat past causes difficulties in old-age. This is because it contains saturated fatty acids which gets stored in the body and results in many physical problems. One of the common physical ailments is atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is a condition of build up fats, cholesterol, etc in and on the artery wall. It may lead to coronary artery disease, stroke, kidney problems etc. Unhealthy diet is a major reason for this. Along with it high blood pressure, smoking, family history also plays a part. In order to change improper eating habits a person can take help from a dietician who can prescribe a healthy diet for the person. In case of abesity, if a person has lost motivation, then he/she can even seek counselling. Also, exercise can help reverse high cholesterol levels.
