Question

2. Explain whether each of the following comparisons indicates a greater influence of genetics on intelligence or a greater influence of environment on scores for identical twins raised together is about +.85. For identical intelligence. The correlation of intelligence test twins raised apart, the correlation is about +.72. The correlation of intelligence scores for identical twins raised together is about +.85. For fraternal twins raised together, it is about +.60 3. Robert and Maya are having an argument about whether intelligence tests are biased. Robert thinks they are but Maya insists they are not. How can they both be right? 4. Explain three reasons why racial differences in intelligence might be caused by environmental factors

Explanation / Answer

2. The findings of the study indicate that intelligence is influenced more by environmental factors as the correlation coefficient is higher for identcal twins raised together ( r= + 0.85) than identical twins who were raised apart( r= +0.72). The correlation coefficient for the former group suggests that identical twins tend to show similar levels of intelligence because of being raised in the same family environment.

The second set of comparison points toward the greater influence of genetics on intelligence as the correlation coefficient is greater for identical twins who are raised together (r=+0.85) than fraternal twins who are raised together (r=+0.60). Correlation coefficient values which are closer to or +1.00 and -1.00 point toward strong correlations and therefore r value for identical twins shows the greater influence of genetics on intelligence as identical twins share 100 % of their genes. Therefore one can conclude here that intelligence has a strong genetic component.
