Explanation / Answer
The primary hypothesis of the study was that the language used in the questions asked about an event effects the reconstruction of the memory of that event.
The independent variable is question framing.
The dependent variable is memory reconstruction.
The results of the study indicated that participants were provided higher estimates of speed when the verb “smashed” was used in comparison to verbs like ‘collided’, ‘bumped’, ‘contacted’ or ‘hit’. With the word ‘smashed’, it was also found that participants reported seeing broken glass in the absence of any when they were tested after a week.
