Interpreting Nonverbal Communication

Nonverbal communication replaces, reinforces, and contradicts verbal communication. Describe a time when one of the nine types of nonverbal cues (Kinesics, Haptics, Physical Appearance, Artifacts, Environmental Factors, Proxemics and Personal Space, Chronemics, Paralanguage, and Silence) as described in the reading caused you to misinterpret the message in a work situation or a personal setting. Then, using the guidelines for improving nonverbal communication (Monitor your Nonverbal Communication and Interpret Others' Nonverbal Communication Tentatively), explain how you can keep this from occurring again.,

Explanation / Answer

Verbal communication is the communication which involves spoken words to communicate a message. However, non-verbal communication is the communication done by sending and receiving messages other than speech or writing. Non-verbal communication includes body language, gestures, facial expressions, body posture, pitch & tone of voice, eye-movements,dress & appearance. Mastering the non-verbal communications gives us the oppurtunity to convey the message more accurately.Non-verbal communication can help us to understand the mood of an individual & also helps in the interpretation of different emotions. Let us begin with some of the common forms or clues of non-verbal communications: 1. Facial expressions- What we say & what our face saysmay be two different things sometimes. Sometimes facial expressions creates problems in husband wife relationships. For example- when husband inform his wife that his mother is coming for a week to meet them & the wife replies saying ' okay, i am happy' but she doesn't give any smiling expression along with her voice leads to misconception on the part of husband thinking that her wife is not happy after listening that his mother is coming. But the truth may be something else, If someone is thinking something and in the middle of a thought suddenly come across any message sometimes creates confusion in mind how to react. What happened here is her facial expressions travel faster than her words which creates disbelief in the mind of her husband. 2. Relaxing and more natural- this is applicable to an interview situation. When someone enters the interview room he needs to convey confidence through body language. 3.Posture- In a conversation if we show slouching then it means that we are not interested in what the other person is saying. Swinging legs back and forth while sitting in a meeting tells others that we are impatient & uninterested in what is going on. 4. Acknowledge- it is nothing but saying yes to someone, it can be expressed in a way by nodding our head.
