Question

This assignment looks at how we might decide between self-gratification and the greater good. “Social value orientation” refers to what factors might influence an individual to look out for him- or herself at the expense of long-term group benefits. For each scenario, decide whether you are an altruist, cooperator, individualist, or competitor and explain why. Also, explain what changes in the scenario would influence you to change the orientation you chose. There can be more than one answer. Your best friend is very sick and needs a certain very rare medication. Others have come down with this illness, too. They are all suffering. You find enough of the drug to cure your friend and perhaps two additional people – depending on how your friend responds to the first dose. Social Value Orientation and Why Circumstances That Would Create a Change, What the Change Would Be, and Why

Explanation / Answer

In the above scenario, I would be a cooperator. I would give the first dose and also retain the additional dose, in case if my friend meeds. I would give away the remaining one dose to those in need. Altruistism is being selfless and helping others. I do not see myself in such a way. I would help people, but only when my need is fulfilled. Hence, in the above scenario, I see myself as a cooperator.
