Explanation / Answer
Before I became a student of Psychology, I held a lot of prejudiced views and attitudes about individuals with a mental illness, mostly because I was under the impression that these illnesses were completely under one’s control and the symptoms were a matter of personal choice. My aunt is a schizophrenic patient and as a child, I witnessed one of her psychotic episodes which made me believe that these individuals were intent on destroying themselves and the lives of others around them. Even my family members described her as an evil person and kept a safe distance from her. Labels such as ‘psycho’ and ‘crazy’ were used frequently.
However, after learning more about mental illnesses as a part of my education in Psychology, I have witnessed a significant change in my perception of individuals diagnosed with a mental disorder. I know recognise the complex set of factors that influence the illnesses and that ‘normal’ behaviour is merely a social and cultural construct. I believe that spreading awareness about mental disorders is perhaps the best method to reduce the stigma attached to it as most people make blind and incorrect assumptions that stem from a lack of knowledge.
