As proven by repeated experimentation, the larger the number of people who are witnessing a violent crime, the less likely they are to act to stop it. People tend to fear the judgment and retribution of their peers more than to consequences of standing by to allow a terrible injustice to occur. Through gradual steps, an average person can go from failing to stop a hate crime such as the Nazis persecution of the Jews, to actively participating. When Nazis start grouping the Jewish people together into the ghettos, average people don’t act because it would be indecent to involve themselves in the affairs of others. And besides, from their point of view, no real harm has been done to the jews thus far. Average people convince themselves into inaction with these weak arguments, but they still feel uneasy about the unfair treatment of their neighbors because, within a deeper self, they are aware that they are in away permitting the injustice. As a defense mechanism, the average people cling to the German propaganda of the inhumanity of the Jewish people as a nation. They try to convince themselves that the lies are true and, somehow, the Jewish people deserve this treatment. Therefore, the average people’s consciences can be clean of any wrongdoing. Now the average people become accustomed to the segregation of the Jewish people and begin to really believe they are superior. The once innocent, average people may now, with no dramatic or sudden change, start being cruel to their Jewish neighbors themselves. And when the Nazis finally start taking the Jewish people away to the camps and killing them by the masses, the German people may be glad to see them go, believe they are getting what they deserved all along. They will do nothing to stop the violence, and may even report Jewish people who they discover hiding or fleeing from the onslaught. In this way, average people can, in small steps, become monsters.

Experiments have shown that when larger people are to witness a crime, they would be less likely to act in order to prevent the crime from happening. What people care about is the judgment of the society and not the consequences of their actions. One average person, if takes gradual steps, could actively participate in stopping a hate crime. An average person, would convince himself about the inaction that he takes while witnessing a crime, such as “it is not their job to intervene” or “there has been no real harm”. These weak arguments refrain them from any action. An average person sinks into the lies, such as in the case of the Jews, where many believed that they deserved those treatments. This cleans their conscience of not taking a stand. As an example of the Jews, people began to think that they were superior, in respiratory se to the popular culture. Even when the Jews were killed, an average German thought that he deserved it. With a complete reshaping of the thought processes, they neither stop the violence nor help them. Rather, they report any Jew that they see, turning into monsters.
