Question

*What do the results of studies using the partial report procedure tell us about the sensory buffers proposed by the modal memory model:? * Compare and contrast the short-term memorv (STM) and working memory (WM) approaches to explaining the operation of immediate memory? Compare and contrast STM and WM span tests (e.g., digit span vs. sentence span) Explain how the study of amnesics (e.g. patient HM), and study of studies of the serial position curve support the distinction between STM and LTM in the modal memory model

Explanation / Answer

Ans. 1

When a stimulus is presented, its sensory traces decays rapidly, lasting for approximately 1000 mili seconds. This brief memory referred as iconic memory.

The iconic memory serves a buffer before information is transferred to working memory and executive control. The effects of different factors like geometric, spatial and experience. These effects have the access and maintenance of information in iconic memory.

Performance in partial report paradigm recall only some part of stimulus. Performance decays with time.

The experiences affects the access to iconic memory while spatial position affects the temporal course of delay.

Ans. 2

S.T.M. or short term memory plays an integral role in memory process, its minimal storage capacity is matched by limited processing.

Working memory or WM proposed by Baddeeley and it can be conceptualised as a type of workbench in which new and old information are constantly being transformed, combined and updated. The concept of working memory also challenges the idea that the capacity of STM is limited to about few items.

Ans. 3

The STM and WM span test analyse the capacity of both memory, the short sentences take little time so they can be memorize easily but the working memory model define that the long words and sentences more time to recall and the time effects response so that the difference between digit test and sentence test resulted the capacity of memory.

Ans. 4

The amnesia is a kind of memory loss and the effects of amnesiacs related to STM and working memory, it also effects the LTM and memory capacity, it is very important that the memory deficit can cause a long time memory damage.

The Serial position curve represent the items remembered as a function of their order they were presented in, curve can be helpful to analyse the effects of STM and LTM for amnesiacs.

STM and LTM shows different representation on the serial position curve because of time duration and length of sentences.
