RE: Sect. 1 Week 10 DQ 8: Commodification and Assisted Reproductive Technologies

COLLAPSE

A commodity can be defined as a useful item that can be bought, sold or traded for other valuable goods. To treat someone as a commodity mean is to think of them as an object/item, by putting a price on them. If a person was a commodity. they lose the rights of a human being. Treating people as commodity can be wrong, but not all the times; especially with certain jobs.

I don’t think that these technologies necessarily treat the fetuses, embryos or children as commodities. The purpose of a surrogate is for a woman to help a couple who can’t conceive on their own. I don’t believe it is wrong for one family to find another method to have a child(ren). It a beautiful blessing. I do think that the process of surrogacy can be abused and manipulative, but it doesn’t mean the technology is treating the children as commodities.

In the sense of surrogacy, there is commodity applied, since there is money offered to the egg and sperm donors, as well as the surrogate but necessarily the fetus.

Explanation / Answer

I agree with the view that technologies that support surrogacy are treating unborn children as commodities. Although they offer great service and relief to individuals who want to have their own children but are unable to conceive due to biological or environmental circumstances, the process involves an exchange of money. Several hospitals, practitioners, donors and surrogates have turned it into a full fledged business opportunity despite their best intentions. I would believe that would healthcare settings purchase expensive machinery required for this process not out of goodwill but with the intent of charging their customers who are in dire need of a child.
