In the given study, the stress management programmes of cognitive behaviour therapy and kundaliniyoga were used as the independependent variables in order to do a comparative study of the effectiveness of these two approaches to dealing with stress related problems. The researchers randomly assigned the sample of Male and female participants of a Swedish company, all of whom had a history of stress-induced health issues into four treatment conditions: group that received cognitive behavioural therapy, control group that did not receive any behavior modification, treatment group that received training in yoga and a second control group which did not receive either yoga or cognitive behavioural training. The cognitive behavioural therapy group was differentiated from the yoga group in terms of the stress management techniques. The participants in the former group received training in multiple methods which included relaxation techniques, group discussion on homework assignments, training in new stress management techniques such as eating slowly, psychoeducation of stress related topics. On the other hand, the main focus of the yoga programme group was on providing training in the physical exercises, healthy eating habits, etc.
2. In the present study, the researchers used the scores on stress related subjective reports and physiological changes in the autonomic nervous system as the dependent variables. The researchers used self-report questionnaire to assess the participants’s psychological or subjective assessment of their own experiences of a situation as stressful, their general feeling of exhaustion in the everyday work environment and self-evaluation of their overall quality of life. Physiological measurements of heart rate, blood sugar tests, urine culture tests to assess the level of stress hormones catecholamines in the body were the techniques which were applied to measure the physiological symptoms of stress in the body. Both these two categories of dependent variables were collected before and after exposure to the stress management training in the two treatment conditions and the findings were then compared to analyse the occurance of any significant difference in the levels of the stress experienced due to the independent variable- that is the two treatment programmesof cognitive behavioural therapy and yoga.
