1. Living in the desert as we do, my listeners and I can grow many beautiful and interesting plants in our gardens without using large amount of water.
This statement is nothing but a depiction about positive thinking, that is looking at the positive side of it even when one is put in the worse of the worst situations. This statement can also be viewed as how one great idea can transform the entire society if they are determined.
Even in the desert the person has great ideas of planting gardens, and the positive side of the situation that he is quoting is that, he doesn’t need great amounts of water to grow the plants. He is essentially thinking of using the resources to the maximum extent possible and even in resource crunch there are amazing things that he can think of which would ensure sustainability.
3. Because recent research suggest children develop positive self-esteem through recognition for their achievements, not from indiscriminate praise, I will persuade the parents and teachers in my audience to modify their behaviour toward children.
This is one of the beatutiful statements, the reason being how there is some amount of analysis done before making the statement. The end goal is clear about making children confident for a bright future ahead which holds many challenges. And this statement is something that is challenging the conventional way of doing things that is indiscriminate praise which is prevalent all across the world. But there are right ways to do it and infact the effectivity of research based ways is definitely better than the conventional or casual ways of doing it. This excerpt also indirectly indicates about the importance of self esteem for a child or an adolescent. The will power that he will persuade parents is something that gives a positive hope and determination along with motivation to do what needs to be done.
5. As a student attending this college on an athletic scholarship, I lead a very busy life because I am responsible for working hard at my sport as well as being held to the same standards as the non-athlete students in my audience.
This statement is really important considering the societal norms. It infact questions how the term success is defined, everyone is good in his own way and in his field of choice, but it is not always right to rate everyone on the same scale. Academics is really important but there are other things which are important as well, sports is something that can make a career but as a sportsman the first challenge is not to master the sport, it is to balance things between sports and academics as the child cannot lose on academics though he is the best one in sports even at a national level. If this statement is extrapolated then it is revolutionary, it gives a result of different scales for measurement of success and a person choosing sports can excel in his field of choice.
