Question

Racial stratification and the subsequent troubles that we have seen in the United States over the years, leaves us wondering if we will ever be able to address race with regards to class, racism, stratification, and class. All of these components cross and intertwine with each other. How can we address this complex issue and how can we find a way to change the negativity towards race, as it is only a construction of how we see ourselves and our world/society? Can we reconstruct race in a more positive way? (respond should be 200 words in length)

So many of you might suggest that income or wealth is a determining factor of class in the US, but that isn't technically true. It is actually a combination of income, inherited wealth, education, social standing and taste. So, you can't just win the lottery and suddenly become upper class, because some things, such as social connections to power channels/influential people might still not be open to you.

So, given that, what are some conditions that might keep people from upward mobility? Can we change them?( at least 100 words in length)

Explanation / Answer

So, race need not be viewed as a problematic word but a word that would help sociologists and psychologists understand the society well. The earlier view that one’s genetic make-up and the race they belong to determine one’s intelligence has lost its significance. People have started accepting each other and started to live together without many conflicts although there are few incidents that provoke racial tensions now and then. The reaction to these tensions is very less or less severe.

Schools, governments and parents at home have a moral responsibility of educating their children positively towards race by saying that we are all humans and we all belong to a single race, human beings.
