Describe the concept of cultural adaptation and provide examples of what has enabled the Inuit to survive in their environment. What were the features of the modern world that were starting to intrude into the Inuit’s life in 1959? What types of cultural practices have become maladaptive for the Inuit while considering complications of relativity? Consider the transition to modern living and participation in a market economy. Cite specific examples from the films.
Explanation / Answer
The concept of cutlural adaptation is the process an individual takes to adapt to a new cutlure. A lot of time and emotions are included in this process. The individual takes time to get used to and be comfortable in a new culture. There are 4 stages to cultural adaptation:
1) honeymoon
2) culture shock
3) recovey
4) adjustment.
The inuit were able to survive in their environment through sustainable housing such as the igloo, the keeps them warm. The rich diet of omega fatty acids found in sea food keeps them warm and strong.They hunt and gather food to build their economy and survival. They hunt seals, whale and fishes. They make traditional clothing and baskets through raw materials. They also have traditional art and crafts.
During the early 1950s the search for oil, was an intrude to the inuits and then came the construction of a chain of radar sites like the Distant early warning system. Many inuits were employed by the system.
In 1959, Alaska became the 49th state of US, therefore allowing them to have the same rights and citizenship of USA. From then till the 20th century, the inuits faced a lot of issues like the use of technology, migration, floating population and the possible loss of their traditional culture.
Cultural practices have become maladaptive, such as use of snowmobile instead of a sled, loss of the innkitut language, Also they stopped moving from place to place and had to settle down where food and houses where available.
The transition to modern living caused the inuits to settle down in small townships, which are generally overcrowded. The children attended schools that did not emphasise their traditions. They entered into the economy and made their mark through arts and crafts. They profited millions throught thier arts.
