Question

You are a consultant on a project team that has been hired by Techlo (a Fortune 100 company) to design and administer an employee survey. The survey contains information about employee job satisfaction, engagement and issues concerning pay and promotion fairness perceptions. The night before your presentation to the client, a Sr. Vice President of Marketing at Techlo calls you and asks you to send her the raw survey data for the Marketing department so she isn't "surprised" by any of the report findings. You respond by saying that "the data are confidential" to which she responds by saying, "Of course! I'm not going to share it with anyone else!" 7. How would you now respond/handle this situation?

Explanation / Answer

It would be professional to calmly state the fact that the, "anyone else" in his statement encompass him with the purview as well, that is, he, despite being the president of the company, does not have the right to have access to the data beforehand as there confidentiality clauses that have to be respected with respect to the subjects, which can cause and ethical and moral dilemma.

It is also important to put forward the point that the raw data is one that can easily be tempered with, and it is an imperative and a rule amongst researchers to protect the raw data and the entrusted information gathered through it as it can have consequences if provided to biased companies.
